Super Good War Drama Summary | The Way Back Movie Review – The Way Back. The Road Back is a 2010 American survival film directed by Peter Weir, from a screenplay by Weir and Keith Clarke. The film was inspired by The Long Walk (1956), the memoir of former Polish prisoner of war Sławomir Rawicz, who claims to have escaped the Soviet Gulag and walked 4,000 miles (6,400 km) to freed during World War II. It stars Jim Sturgess, Colin Farrell, Ed Harris and Saoirse Ronan, along with Alexandru Potocean, Sebastian Urzendowsky, Gustaf Skarsgård, Dragoș Bucur, and Mark Strong. During World War II, following the Soviet invasion of Poland, young Polish military officer Janusz Wieszczek was held as a prisoner by the NKVD and interrogated. The Soviet Union, unable to get him to admit that he was a spy, also captured his wife and brutally tortured her; from her, they blackmailed a statement condemning him. He was sentenced to 20 years in the Gulag labor camp deep in Siberia. There, he met the people he later planned to escape: Mr. Smith, an American engineer; Khabarov, an actor; Valka, a hardened Russian criminal; Tomasz, a Polish artist; Voss, a Latvian priest; Kazik, a Polish with night blindness; and Zoran, a Yugoslav accountant. Khabarov secretly told Janusz that he was planning to flee south to Mongolia, via Lake Baikal. Smith warns Janusz that it is Khabarov’s way of discussing escape plans with the newcomers, to maintain his morale, but to no avail. Janusz sometimes seems to have hallucinations of the front door of a country house and the adjoining window ledge, where a tree is planted, and a rock he tries to reach. Janusz continues to escape with Smith, Valka, Voss, Tomasz, Zoran and Kazik in a severe snowstorm that covers their tracks.
